STAR
TREK: EXPLORATIONS Every kid plays pretend. What they play depends on the popularity of the TV and movies at the time. For myself, it was Star Trek. Even today, I can remember sitting alone downstairs in our old house, a boy of perhaps 6 or 7, leaning back in that great old black padded chair of ours. It made the perfect Captain's chair, and from it, while watching Star Trek, I would command my own missions. I was Captain John Tiberius Pike of the USS Explorer, and while I knew the crew of the Enterprise quite well, my own crew was quite distinct. Over the next few years those adventures ranged across space and time and dimensions, and eventually some of them found their way onto paper. But, of course, those stories were pretty rudimentary and have long since been lost. But the core concept has remained. With the coming of the Internet, this sort of fandom has become not only publicly realized, but immensely popular. Fan fiction has taken many different forms, some of it ridiculous in its extremity, a portion of it not only well done but thoughtful and compelling as well. More recently, fan fiction has begun to produce movies, made for the Internet, that have migrated far beyond. For my part, I don't aspire to anything this grand. If I were to dabble in a movie, it would be far in the future, when I have a bit more technical knowledge than I do now. For now, I am far more interested in breathing new life into an old fantasy that helped to define my childhood. Star Trek: Explorations is meant to be a homage to Star Trek, not to step on its toes or to assume that what I would like the franchise to do should be done. ST:E will deal with my own characters, and though I will try to make it a full part of the Trek universe, any pre-existing characters from the shows will likely never be seen, save as cameos or passing references. It might be a measure of arrogance on my part to assume that keeping as close to canon as possible could somehow validate this project. But it is also my own way to salute a franchise that I have grown up with and loved for a very long time. So I hope you enjoy this setting. Please realize that this is not a truly serious endeavor, however. I will do my best to tell a good tale or two, of course, but ST:E should be viewed as a sort of side hobby. It is something that I have fun with, and I hope you do as well. -- John M. Dollan, January 22, 2005 WHAT'S NEW
