Places and Planets in SG-E

Most locations in SG-E will be placed within the Small Magellanic Cloud.  However, there will be references to other locales, in other Galaxies, and these too will be defined for continuity's sake.

Andromeda Galaxy
A large spiral galaxy some 2.5 million light years away.  It is the largest neighbor to the Milky Way, and is the galaxy to which the Pegasus Galaxy is bound.  There are no known civilizations or worlds in the Andromeda Galaxy (although planets doubtless exist), but there has been some speculation that the Ancients, having lived in Pegasus for so long, may have settled that galaxy to some extent as well.

Visible as a faint patch of nebulosity from both Earth and worlds in the Small Magellanic Cloud, Andromeda is a prominent feature in the night skies of worlds within Pegasus.

Atlantis
When the Ancients settled Earth, perhaps as long ago as 50 million years, or as recently as 15 million years ago, they settled on the Antarctic continent, which at the time was a relatively temperate landmass due to the higher global temperature of the time.  It was here that they constructed (or just possibly imported) the city of Atlantis, a massive construction that housed most of the Earthly Ancient population, and which is also capable of spaceflight.

Between five and ten million years ago, when the plague that was decimating the Ancients in the Milky Way seemed unconquerable, the Ancient departed Earth with Atlantis, and headed to the Pegasus Galaxy.  After an eventual war with the Wraith that lasted for thousands of years, the Ancients fled through their Stargate back to Earth, while Atlantis itself was sunk beneath the waves of its host planet.  There it remained, until it was rediscovered and raised by a team of explorers from Earth.

Earth
The third planet in the Sol System, Earth is a rich garden world with a long evolutionary history.  More importantly, it is the planet which saw the origins of the Human race, although there is evidence to support the theory that Humans were genetically created by the Ancients, who are a far older species, but which themselves appear quite Human.  Indeed, many modern Humans possess the so-called Ancient Gene, evidence of a definite link between the two races.

Other than the birthplace of the modern Human race, Earth is a very unremarkable planet as far as habitable worlds go, possessing a single large moon which aids in stabilizing its axial tilt over billions of years.  Several continents and oceans contribute to its lovely, blue marble appearance.  The Human race has made a definite impact, of course, and traces of industrial construction and pollution are visible both on the surface and in orbit.  Up close, the planet is highly industrialized, and bears ample evidence of the thriving civilization currently upon it.

Magh Turahd
A garden planet located within the Small Magellanic Cloud, this is the world that was first colonized by the Partholonian Ancients some 10,000 years ago.  It is a rich world of green continents and blue oceans, and possessing a minimal north polar cap.  Because of open oceanic circulation, the planet is generally quite warm, even at the poles.  However, a ring around the planet, created in recent millennia due to a massive impact on its single major moon (now also ringed), causes yearly dark periods where plant growth is highly retarded and cold weather becomes predominant.  The rings are likely to erode away in the next few thousand years however, but it is likely that the ecological impact created by their shadow will result in regional mass extinctions.

The Partholonians colonized an island, roughly the size of Britain, positioned between two major continents.  On this lush land they built a small city, the majority of which is located underground.  Why they chose to build underground is unknown, but from a modern standpoint it is an excellent tactic.  From orbit or the air, the only signs of habitation, ruined or otherwise, are a small village dominated by a major temple, and the Stargate itself.  This city and the Stargate were apparently powered by a single Zero Point Module, but its power capacity has long since expired, leaving the city dark and uninhabitable for the present, and making the Stargate incapable of dialing any location outside of the SMC.

Little is known of the city itself.  Named Tuana, it is believed to be a fraction of the size of Atlantis, but otherwise quite similar.  Whether or not is can achieve spaceflight is unknown.  The village ruins are unnamed, and typically referred to as "The Village".  Magh Turahd itself is known in Fir Bholg legends, but was never found by the Goa'uld immigrants.  To this day, most believe that the planet was ever more than a myth or, if it had existed, was long ago destroyed.

Milesian Free Republic
Located on the planet of Milesius, this is the lone government of that world.  Despite its name, the world is under the thumb of a fascist regime making use of discovered Ancient technology and looted Goa'uld technology.  Initially, the planet had been settled by the Ancients, but in time they socially and technologically devolved into the Nemedians, and for thousands of years lived in a peaceful agrarian society, limited to a small number of villages and towns on a single continent.  However, the population was centralized under the regime of the Goa'uld, so that by the time that the Dannan drove off the oppressors, the Milesians (as they were now known) were living in a single community.

It did not take long for them to learn the use of abandoned Goa'uld technology, and with it they soon secured their own planetary space.  However, they soon discovered technology long ago left behind and hidden by the original Ancient settlers, and though they have not been able to learn the secrets of repairing or duplicating this technology, it (combined with the Goa'uld technology) has helped secure the Milesians' place in the SMC power hierarchy.

The current regime is a fascist dictatorship, ruled by an official with the title Representative.  While he is officially said to be elected, the elections are openly and obviously staged, and are always unanimous.  The only time a Representative has been replaced, historically, is when he has shown signs of carelessness or weakness and has been assassinated or exiled by his opposition.

It is official Republic policy to attack and kill all Fir Bholg and Dannan encountered, and to allow no Fomhor access to Milesian space.  All Humans encountered are to be integrated into the Republic for their own well being, even though this typically involves massive relocation to on world reservations, or off world work camps.  In recent years, the Milesians have been suffering revolts from within their military, the Republican Army, as the harsh way of life wears on the soldiers, who enjoy very few freedoms, even when compared to the average Milesians citizen.  The Army is, in fact, treated in such a manner out of fear by the current Representative, Heremon, whose paranoia of a mass revolt by the Army may indeed be fostering just such an eventuality.

Milesius
This is a garden world located within the Small Magellanic Cloud, and home to the Milesian Free Republic.  As a planet, it is rather ordinary, being of near Earth-size and mass, with a single large moon that possesses a thin carbon dioxide atmosphere.  The planet was first settled by the Ancients, and their Nemedian descendents eventually formed an agrarian society.  After the Goa'uld were driven away, however, the people, now known as Milesians, swiftly developed a technological society, and though the population tends to remain largely concentrated on a single continent, signs of heavy industrialization are common.  Orbital space is also heavily populated with a wide variety of satellites.  There are some minor outposts throughout the solar system, but by and large the population remains on Milesius.
Milky Way
The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy, and is the home galaxy of Earth-descended Humans, the Goa'uld, and a host of other alien species.  The Galaxy is some 80 to 100,000 light years in diameter, and averages some 3,000 light years in thickness, though this varies from the core to the outer regions.  It is an active galaxy, comprised of old and young stars, numbering perhaps 100 billion, many of which possess life bearing planets.  Many of these worlds have been terraformed into habitability  by the Goa'uld, while others were made habitable by the Ancients.  Many more worlds have unique biospheres, like Earth, and are billions of years old.  The Galaxy itself is estimated to be some 13.6 billion years old, nearly the age of the Universe itself.

Life is thought to have arisen quite naturally in the Galaxy's youth, and it may have been a thriving scene that the Ancients first found when they fled their home galaxy and arrived here, tens of millions of years ago.  However, the great plague which decimated the Ancients some ten million years ago or so may have also wreaked havoc with life in the Galaxy.  The Ancients themselves were able to wipe out the plague and reseed the Galaxy with life, even as they themselves ascended to a higher plane of existence.

Over the next three or four billion years the Milky Way may collide with the larger Andromeda Galaxy, and after a slow motion merger of some 1 billion years the two galaxies will have formed a single, giant elliptical galaxy.

Pegasus Galaxy
Also known as the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy, UGC 12613, DDO 216, A2304, Peg DIG, or Pegasus Dwarf, this is a dwarf irregular galaxy located within the constellation of Pegasus from the point of view of Earth.  Discovered by telescopic observations in the 1950's, it is a companion of the much larger spiral Andromeda Galaxy.

This is a galaxy that has a largely metal-poor stellar population, and as such is a relatively resource poor galaxy.  It is located some 3.2 to 3.5 million light years from the Milky Way.

Several million years ago, the Ancients fled the Milky Way to the Pegasus Galaxy in their city-ship of Atlantis, in an attempt to escape a plague that was decimating their population.  Because of Pegasus' metal-poor stellar population, they found the galaxy largely lifeless, and so set about seeding it with life.  For millions of years the Ancients spread Stargates and life here, until they were confronted by and nearly defeated by an alien-Ancient hybrid race called the Wraith.

Today the Pegasus Galaxy is dominated by the Wraith, who regularly "cull" Human populations still existing there.  An Earth presence is also currently placed in Pegasus, based on the Ancient city ship of Atlantis itself.

Small Magellanic Cloud
Also called the SMC, or NGC-292, this is a small irregular dwarf galaxy in orbit of the Milky Way.  It is some 200,000 light years from the Milky Way, and sports a population of around 30 billion stars in a 10,000 light year diameter.  While the presence of many main sequence stars is evidence for a burst of star formation early in its history, the preponderance of young, hot blue stars also hints at a massive period of stellar formation much more recently, perhaps related to its gravitational distortion by the Milky Way.

The SMC is home to three major powers, being an Unas nation of  beings now called the Fomhor, a Goa'uld group calling themselves the Fir Bholg, and a Human race of Ancient descent called the Milesian Free Republic.  The galaxy was initially colonized by a large group of Ancients shortly after their return from the Pegasus Galaxy 10,000 years ago, and has since been populated by Unas, Goa'uld, and Humans.

Tuana
Located on Magh Turahd, this is a small city of the Ancients, buried beneath the surface.  Little is known about it, since it was sealed when it was abandoned, and the interior has since developed a high level of carbon dioxide, possibly due to either some interior malfunction, or a deliberate act before the city was abandoned.  While some areas within have been explored, the volume of the city is simply too great to allow for a passive venting.

The city is believed to be similar to Atlantis, though it is not likely capable of spaceflight.  However, it may have been able to support a population of thousands, and was likely the center of research and exploration in the SMC.  The potential for what lies within Tuana is great, although remote readings indicate that there are no active Zero Point Modules.  Minor naqadah  reactors supply minimal power for what must be background systems.

There are some surface indications of Tuana, including protruding towers and three different access buildings.  All of these, however, have been heavily overgrown in the 6,000 years since the city was abandoned by the fading Partholonian Ancients.

Village, The
Located on Magh Turahd, in a clearing near the local Stargate, this is a settlement that had once been inhabited by the Nemedian descendents of the Partholonian Ancients.  What happened to the inhabitants is unknown, but there appears to be no indigenous Human population on the planet any longer.  Best indications are that the Village was abandoned perhaps 1,100 years ago.  This might indicate Fir Bholg interference, but there are no signs of such an occupation on the planet.

The remains of the village have since been built over by the SG-E from Earth, although there are several sections that have remained untouched because of their archaeological importance.  For the most part, however, the Village refers equally to the modern base, as well as to the ruins.
